As Black As I Can Be
by Monet Goode
Grade 6, CO

Young People's Poetry Contest, 2002
Blue Ribbon Poem

Don't judge me by my color, Or the way I dress, Don't say anything about my hair, Or it's nappyness, I said don't judge me by my color, Or the way I dress, I love hair baby boo, Don't hate the nappyness, We all are different people, Can't all be the same, But I think I stand out, When I shake my hair and do my thang, Don't judge me by my color, Or the way I dress, Don't look at my hair, And say ooh that's nappyness, Cause nappy makes me happy, But may not excite you, Yeah that's right you heard me baby boo
