Pilot Discovery
I was a young American pilot. I flew from New York City to Paris, France. The world was amazed by my solo flight. The name of my airplane was the Spirit of St. Louis.

Your task is to find out who I am and more details about me and my famous flight. Your research findings should include the following:

  • my name
  • my birthplace (city, state, country)
  • the year I was born
  • my nickname
  • what type of airplane I flew
  • what year I took my famous flight
  • which ocean I flew over
  • what the weather conditions were like during my flight
  • why my flight is important in history

Question for Thought

Fame
What does it mean to be famous? How did the young American pilot become famous? Can you think of a person of today that is famous for an invention or accomplishment?
