Nature's Beat
by Elysse Lindell
Grade 4, WI

Young People's Poetry Contest, 2002
Blue Ribbon Poem

Every simple or complicated creature
Has a rhythm, a pattern, a steady beat
From violins and trumpets with kettle drums
Or the long old rhythms of tired stepping feet.

Waves lapping onto a steaming sandy shore
A child rapidly splashes in fast tides
Like a cat sipping creamy milk in a glass
Her kitten is covered as streams of milk ride.

Cold tree boughs scrape windows weighed down by fresh snow
As it creates a spooky toe-tap racket.
The snow drips off the bright evergreen branches
There's a free Halloween Pay-Per-View packet.

Ticking a one-one-thousand on an old used clock
The crickets’ firecrackling sound fills the air
Two friends jump hot peppers down a thawing street
Slowly following them, blossoms on the stairs.

No bushy thick coats on their sore aching backs
Snow pants and boots put away for next year’s use
April’s showers are coming soon for May’s help
And the trees are ready to give shade like spruce.

Lightning bugs soon are flashing to guide us through nights
Dragonflys wings glitter and sparkle in light
While they join in the symphony of flapping wings
Each creature's solo reaches up and takes flight.

Everyone has a place in this lovely world.
Some obvious than others might know about
We all have our part to play blending throughout
And in the end we are nature’s beat no doubt.
