Skeleton Fingers
by Kristina Tester
Grade 4, MN

Young People's Poetry Contest, 2002
Blue Ribbon Poem

On snow’s first fall
as it cloaks the branches of the trees,
They become like skeleton fingers
creaking their joints in the cold night air.
Suddenly, at midnight, they come to life
waving and howling in the dark shadows.
With snapping, crackling and cackling
they claw at the window panes of cozy warm houses,
dying to get in and warm their frosty bones by the fire.
And then, as the first beam of light streaks across the horizon,
they transform back to branches covered by white cloaks of snow.
