Leif Fearn's work with children and writing had its genesis many years ago when his sixth-grade students' fiction ended up as a full page of stories in the local newspaper. Later, in both the Southwest and Northwest, he had the opportunity to emphasize literacy development as a trainer of Head Start teachers and aides. His early applications of creative thinking to existing curriculum, however, eventually led to his and Nancy's conception of the Balanced Writing instruction. Nancy Farnan's teaching began with middle and secondary students in the Midwest. Early in her career, she experienced her students' learning to write as watching buds opening to full bloom--the changes were observable, tangible, and powerful. She was impressed by the power her students discovered as they became increasingly effective writers. A little over a decade ago, Leif and Nancy began to use their experiences, along with those of several outstanding teachers and colleagues, to develop the concept of Balanced Writing instruction. For a decade they have worked with teachers in the Writing Institute for Teachers at San Diego State University, refining and adding to their conception of what a Balanced Writing program would look and sound like. They have authored and co-authored many books and articles on writing and regularly lead workshops to promote Balanced Writing instruction and literacy. Today, Leif and Nancy teach at San Diego State University, where they share an office in the School of Teacher Education. As key figures in the development of Balanced Writing instruction, they have devoted their professional lives to literacy and the development of writing skills. Married, Leif and Nancy live in San Diego, California, where they meet regularly with the professional writers' community.
