Introduction The
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) became effective on September
1, 1998. As a result, the state aligned the Texas Assessment of Academic
Skills (TAAS) to reflect changes in the curriculum. The alignment of the
TAAS to the TEKS was reflected in the tests administered in the spring of
2000. The TAAS was administered for the last time during the 2001-2002
school year. Beginning in the 2002-2003 school year, students take the
Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), a more-comprehensive,
more-challenging examination than the TAAS. The objectives and student
expectations addressed on the TAKS are taken directly from the TEKS. The
TAKS program, like the TEKS curriculum, is vertically aligned, meaning the
tests become more rigorous as students advance from grade to grade.
